Testing the spectral variation hypothesis by using satellite multispectral images

چکیده
In the present paper, a test of the spectral variation hypothesis (SVH) was performed using multispectral high resolution satellite data. The SVH was tested by comparing the relationship between the spectral heterogeneity and species richness in plots of different size (100– 10000 m) in a complex wetland ecosystem, the “Montepulciano Lake”, Central Italy. The nature reserve of the Montepulciano Lake is centered on a 100 ha shallow lake surrounded on three sides by a Phragmites australis and Carex sp. pl. marsh of about 280 ha. The monitoring program for the reserve vegetation started in 2002 and is based on the analysis of 1, 100 m and 1 ha (10000 m) plots, organized in such a manner that four of the smaller size plots are nested, following a random design, within a larger one. Data on species composition and community structure were collected in the plots and stored in a GIS-linked archive. A multispectral Quickbird satellite image (3 m spatial resolution) acquired of the wetland and lake ecosystem during the same period was radiometrically and geometrically corrected. We performed an analysis to examine the use of spectral heterogeneity using the four visible and infrared wavebands of the satellite image to predict species richness at the different spatial scales. The spectral heterogeneity was found to explain about 20% of the variance of species richness at the 100 m scale and about 50% at the 1 ha scale. It was concluded that multispectral high resolution satellite data can contribute to the biodiversity assessment of complex wetland ecosystems. © 2004 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Fusion of Panchromatic and Multispectral Images Using Non Subsampled Contourlet Transform and FFT Based Spectral Histogram (RESEARCH NOTE)
Image fusion is a method for obtaining a highly informative image by merging the relative information of an object obtained from two or more image sources of the same scene. The satellite cameras give a single band panchromatic (PAN) image with high spatial information and multispectral (MS) image with more spectral information. The problem exists today is either PAN or MS image is available fr...
متن کاملAutomatic Road Detection and Extraction From MultiSpectral Images Using a New Hierarchical Object-based Method
Road detection and Extraction is one of the most important issues in photogrammetry, remote sensing and machine vision. A great deal of research has been done in this area based on multispectral images, which are mostly relatively good results. In this paper, a novel automated and hierarchical object-based method for detecting and extracting of roads is proposed. This research is based on the M...
متن کاملDetection of zinc-lead mineralization and associated alteration in the Mehdiabad deposit, Yazd province, using ASTER and Landsat 8-OLI satellite images
The Mehdiabad zinc-lead deposit, which is located at the East of Mehriz city, is a carbonate-hosted ore deposit lying in the dolomitic rocks of Taft Formation. This deposit is composed of oxide-carbonate and sulfide ores. Different spectral processing techniques were applied to ASTER and Landsat 8-OLI multispectral images to detect different mineralization zones and associated alterations. In O...
متن کاملHerbal plants zoning using target detection algorithms on time-series of Sentinel-2 multispectral images (Amygdalus Scoparia)
Today, medicinal plants have a special place in the economy and health of a society. Due to the natural growth of many of these products, the necessity of zoning them for optimum and optimal utilization seems necessary. Traditional zoning solutions are not efficient due to their low accuracy and speed, therefore a new approach is needed. Remote sensing data have many applications in various fie...
متن کاملEffects of spatial and spectral resolution in estimating ecosystem α-diversity by satellite imagery
Remote sensing represents a powerful tool to derive quantitative and qualitative information about ecosystem biodiversity. In particular, since plant species richness is a fundamental indicator of biodiversity at the community and regional scales, attempts were made to predict species richness (spatial heterogeneity) by means of spectral heterogeneity. The possibility of using spectral variance...
